Are Appliances With High Energy Efficiency Ratings Worth It?

A question that our customers at SE Appliances regularly ask us is whether it is worthwhile paying a bit extra for appliances that have a higher energy efficiency rating. With energy rates at an all-time high, households are understandably looking for the best ways to reduce their energy bills. While we wouldn’t suggest you throw out a relatively new appliance to replace it with an appliance with a slightly higher energy efficiency rating, if your appliance is showing signs that it is coming to the end of its lifespan, we would definitely recommend that your next appliance has one of the highest energy efficiency ratings to help reduce your energy consumption and your bills. Energy Efficiency Ratings Explained When you buy a new appliance such as a washing machine, dishwasher or fridge freezer, there will be a label displaying the appliance’s energy efficiency rating. If you are buying an appliance online, the energy efficiency rating will be shown in the product specification details. In 2020, a new energy rating system was introduced in the UK, moving away from the old system that used A+++ to D as ratings. The new system was introduced to make the system easier to understand and it now runs from A to G.  A is the highest energy efficiency class and appliances with this class will help to minimise your energy usage.  How Much Can I Save with an A-rated Appliance? Savings will vary depending on the type of appliance you are using, the model and the energy rate you are paying to your energy company. As a guide, switching from a D-rated washing machine to an A-rated model can save you up to £150 over the lifetime of the washing machine. Tumble dryers are one of the biggest drains on household energy, and switching from a D to an A-rated tumble dryer could save you over £600 over the lifetime of the tumble dryer. Tips for Reducing Your Energy Bills As well as choosing appliances with higher energy ratings, there are some other ways you can potentially reduce your bills: If you are considering installing a new, energy efficient appliance, we’re here to help! We can recommend the best models for reducing your energy bills and professionally install your appliance.
